Talking strategy & social media in podcast form
I joined Mark Pollard on his Sweathead podcast to talk about leading a social-first team of strategists
Hi. Hey. Hello. This is a special edition of The Other 90. If you missed the first seven editions, you can read them here.
Let’s start here:
I’m excited to share my conversation with Mark Pollard from the latest episode of his great podcast, Sweathead. Mark and I have known each other for five or six years, and I’ve always appreciated his ability to push thinking outside the traditional strategic boxes while simultaneously helping people understand why those boxes are also at times useful. When Mark and I speak, it’s usually about our shared love of soccer (né football), not strategy, so it was a blast to get to talk shop for a little bit.
In our 40ish minute conversation, we covered a bunch of topics, including:
Why I think social has been the best strategy discipline to start a career in for the last decade
How we've evolved the way we look at social and brief projects for it
What happens when brand strategy and social strategy meet
What having the word "relevance" in my job title actually means
A sentence in which I use the word "things" to describe no less than three different things
Mark pressing me on why people hire Annex88 and my best response being "we make dope shit"
Feel free to add our convo to your queue at your leisure. If you do get a chance to listen, I’d love to hear what you think.
Bergy Bits
Over the course of the podcast, I specifically mentioned two items that have been massive strategic earworms for me:
This piece that lays out how Social Media 3.0 is all about social impacting IRL culture.
This book that outlines the shift from deep & narrow culture to shallow & broad culture, and what that means for how culture will continue to change moving forward.
The Other 90 is written by Rob Engelsman, a former baby model and now the SVP, Head of Strategy & Relevance at Annex88 in New York City. You can find him on Twitter, Instagram, & LinkedIn.
